Rocky Road
It was supposed to be a girls’ weekend in scenic St. George, Utah that would include shopping, trying out the local cuisine, and participating in a breast cancer fundraiser. The fact that one of the organizers of the fundraising event, a local doctor, disappeared two months ago was not supposed to be Sadie’s problem. In fact, she refuses to participate in the grassroots investigation her friend Caro, and Caro’s cousin, Tess, have put together prior to her arrival. But then she meets the ex-wife of the missing doctor. How could she not ask a few questions . . . that lead to a few more questions . . . that lead to a small town and yet even more questions. Before she knows it, Sadie is in the middle of yet another murder investigation and trying to piece together a convoluted trail of good intentions, hidden motivations, and philanthropy turned big business.

Author Josi S. Kilpack
Born and raised in Salt Lake City Utah, I met my husband in high-school–well, he wasn’t my husband then, just the cute guy in weight training with the permed mullet–and we married in 1993. I wrote my first book while on bed rest with my third child and have gone on to publish 20 novels, the most recent being part of The Sadie Hoffmiller Culinary Mystery Series.
I currently live in Willard, Utah with my husband, children, and cat.

My Thoughts
Rocky Road is a very interesting read with the unique feature of recipes sprinkled throughout the book. This was a nice addition to the story- especially when the characters in the book seemed to enjoy the food so much! I haven’t tried the recipes yet, but there are a few that will definitely be on the menu in the near future.
This is not the first book in the Sadie Hoffmiller Culinary Mystery Series, it’s actually book 10, but it’s the first one I have read. While there were references to past investigations, this book was easily read as a stand-alone novel. Be warned though, it will whet your appetite for the other books in the series.
How can a fun girls’ weekend turn into a murder investigation - only when Sadie is only of the women there for the weekend. Instead of shopping, chatting, trying new foods and catching up, they end up attending a memorial service for a local doctor. How much fun is that? Then Officer Nielson asks for Sadie’s help in gathering information about the missing doctor’s disappearance and presumed death.
I enjoyed the relationships that Sadie started to develop in this novel. Caro, her friend is loyal, once she makes up her mind to do what she wants to do and not what other people want her to do. Sadie did not get on well with everyone however, and I like this because it mirrors real life.
I love stories that are not predictable, and this one has a superbly unpredictable plot. Just when you think that the mystery is solved, another twist happens and off you go again. I had a hard time going to bed at night because I didn’t want to put the book down.
Josi Kilpack’s faith is evident in the book as Sadie believes that she is often led by God into these investigations. This book is good, clean fun with no foul language of any kind and suitable for anyone  of any age willing to read a multi-chapter book. This was one of the things I appreciated most about this book. It’s hard to find a well-written book with a fascinating plot, yet rated E (for everyone).
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It rates 4 stars!
